A printing plant expansion and renovation of this magnitude for an operating newspaper facility running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, was like “changing the engine while the motor is running.”

Project elements included a 96,540-square-foot expansion to existing newspaper packaging center; a 14,030-square-foot expansion to existing newsprint storage area to increase inventory capacity; new offices, restrooms, locker space and an employee break room; improved site traffic circulation for delivery trucks, including the addition of nine loading docks and more than 18,000 square feet of apron; and advanced climate control for the entire facility.

The mechanical fire suppression vacuum inserter and printing distribution systems were completely replaced. Storage capacity was expanded by 293% to streamline the production process.

This project was the recipient of St. Louis Construction News and Review, 2003 Industrial Regional Excellence Award.
